Gdański Teatr Szekspirowski

About

The Gdański Teatr Szekspirowski is one of Gdańsk’s most distinctive cultural venues, a bold fusion of contemporary architecture and Renaissance inspiration. Designed by Italian architect Renato Rizzi, the building’s dark brick exterior resembles a fortified city gate, while its interior reveals a flexible, multi‑level theatre inspired by the Elizabethan playhouses that once stood in Gdańsk. Its most remarkable feature is the retractable roof, which opens to the sky and allows performances to take place in natural light, echoing the atmosphere of Shakespeare’s original Globe. The theatre hosts a wide range of events, from classical and contemporary drama to concerts, festivals, and international collaborations, with the annual Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival as its flagship. More than a performance space, it is a cultural bridge linking the city’s historical ties to Shakespearean theatre with a vibrant, modern artistic scene, offering visitors an unforgettable blend of history, innovation, and creative energy.
