The SS Sołdek Museum Ship is one of Gdańsk’s most distinctive maritime landmarks, moored along the Motława River beside the granaries of Ołowianka Island. Launched in 1947, it was the first seagoing vessel built in Poland after the Second World War, symbolising the rebirth of the nation’s shipbuilding industry. Today, the restored steamship forms part of the National Maritime Museum and offers visitors a rare chance to explore an authentic working vessel. Its engine room, crew quarters, and cargo holds reveal the demanding conditions of life at sea, while exhibitions on board present the ship’s history and the broader story of post‑war maritime trade. With its striking silhouette and industrial charm, the SS Sołdek stands as a proud reminder of Gdańsk’s shipyard heritage and the resilience that shaped the city’s modern identity.

Location

The SS Sołdek museum ship is moored on the Motława River at Ołowianka 9–13, alongside Ołowianka Island directly opposite the medieval Gdańsk Crane and the Long Embankment in the historic centre of Gdańsk. It forms part of the National Maritime Museum complex next to the main Maritime Museum building and the Maritime Culture Centre, with nearby sights including St John’s Gate, Straganiarska Gate, the Black Pearl tourist ship and the riverfront promenade leading in a few minutes on foot to Długi Targ, Neptune Fountain and the Main Town Hall.
