St. Catherine’s Church is the oldest parish church in Gdańsk and one of the city’s most atmospheric historic landmarks. Dating back to the 13th century, it showcases a graceful blend of Gothic architecture and later Baroque additions that reflect centuries of change. Its slender tower, crowned with a distinctive spire, has long been a defining feature of the Old Town skyline. Inside, the church holds a rich collection of art and memorials linked to Gdańsk’s merchants, sailors, and scholars, including tributes to the astronomer Johannes Hevelius, who is buried here. The interior’s calm, luminous space contrasts with the dramatic history of the building, which has survived fires, wars, and a major blaze in 2006 before being carefully restored. Today, St. Catherine’s Church is not only a place of worship but also a cultural venue known for its carillon concerts, whose bell melodies drift across the surrounding streets, adding to the timeless charm of Gdańsk’s historic heart.

Location

St. Catherine’s Church is located in the heart of Gdańsk’s Old Town at ul. Katedralna 1, near the western edge of the Main Town, on the western side of the Old Town Market Square. Nearby you can easily reach St. Nicholas Church, the Old Town Hall, the Old Town Market Square, the Motława River embankment, and the streets of Mariacka and Piwna, so it fits naturally into a walk through the historic centre and along the riverside promenade.
