State Museum at Majdanek

About

The State Museum at Majdanek is one of the most powerful memorial sites in Europe, established in 1944 on the grounds of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp on the outskirts of Lublin. Preserved almost exactly as it was at the moment of liberation, the site includes original barracks, watchtowers, gas chambers and the crematorium, offering a stark and authentic insight into the atrocities committed here during World War II. More than 79,000 people of various nationalities were murdered at Majdanek, and the museum’s mission is to honour their memory while educating visitors about the mechanisms of persecution and genocide. Exhibitions present personal stories, archival photographs, documents and objects belonging to prisoners, deepening the understanding of their suffering and resilience. The vast grounds, together with the monumental mausoleum containing ashes of victims, create a solemn space for reflection and remembrance, making Majdanek an essential place for confronting the darkest chapters of history.
