The Archcathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist is one of Lublin’s most important sacred landmarks and a defining monument of early Baroque architecture in Poland. Built by the Jesuits between 1592 and 1617, it introduced a new architectural style to the region, inspired by Roman church design. Its massive façade, richly decorated chapels, and elegant interior frescoes reflect the grandeur of the Counter‑Reformation era. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order, the church became the city’s cathedral and later the seat of the archdiocese. Over centuries it survived fires, wartime damage, and extensive restoration, yet it has retained its solemn atmosphere and artistic integrity. Today the archcathedral remains a vibrant centre of religious life, admired for its historic crypts, ornate altars, and the remarkable acoustic qualities that enhance liturgical music.
Lublin Poland
The Archcathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist is located at Królewska 10 in Lublin's historic Old Town, Poland, on a hill near the former city walls, serving as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lublin. This early Baroque landmark, built 1586-1604 for the Jesuits and modeled after Rome's Chiesa del Gesù, features stunning frescoes and crypts amid a spacious cathedral square. Nearby stand Lublin Castle with its Donjon tower and Trinity Chapel, the Crown Tribunal, Grodzka Gate to the Jewish Quarter, Market Square's colorful tenements, and Po Farze Square's ruins, all woven into the Old Town's cobblestone charm with cafes and gates like Kraków Gate just steps away.
