Crown Tribunal

Crown Tribunal
About

The Crown Tribunal is one of Lublin’s most emblematic buildings, standing at the heart of the Old Town as a reminder of the city’s former role as a major judicial centre of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Originally a Gothic town hall rebuilt after fires in the 16th century, it was transformed into the seat of the Crown Tribunal, the highest appellate court for the nobility of Lesser Poland. Its Renaissance and later Classicist features, shaped by architects such as Domenico Merlini, give the structure its dignified appearance, marked by pilasters, symbolic reliefs, and a commanding façade. Tribunal sessions brought nobles, lawyers, and officials to Lublin, turning the square into a lively hub of political and social life. Today the building serves as a cultural venue and a striking architectural landmark, preserving the legacy of centuries of legal and civic history.

Location

Crown Tribunal in Lublin is located at Rynek 1, right in the center of the Old Town's Market Square (Rynek), Poland, serving historically as the 16th-century seat of the highest appeals court for Lesser Poland's nobility. This Neoclassical landmark, originally a Gothic town hall rebuilt after the 1389 fire and redesigned in the 1780s by Domenico Merlini, now functions as Lublin's Wedding Palace with its basement housing the start of the Underground Trail. Nearby, the square bursts with colorful Renaissance tenements, atmospheric cafes, and galleries; just uphill stand Lublin Castle with its Donjon tower and Trinity Chapel, Po Farze Square ruins, Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Archcathedral of St. John, Crown Tribunal-adjacent Grodzka Gate to the Jewish Quarter, and cobblestone streets leading to Kraków Gate—all weaving visitors into Lublin's vibrant historic core.
