Commissioned in 1679 by Count Wenzel Adalbert of Sternberg, the chateau was designed by French architect Jean Baptiste Mathey to evoke the elegance of Roman villas. Its dramatic staircase, adorned with sculptures of gods and Titans, leads to manicured gardens dotted with rare Bambelli vases. Inside, visitors encounter illusionistic frescoes by Flemish artists Abraham and Izak Godijn, including a breathtaking apotheosis of the Habsburg dynasty. Today, Troja Chateau serves as a branch of the Prague City Gallery, hosting exhibitions of 19th-century Czech art and contemporary installations. The estate’s seasonal opening from April to October makes it a popular destination for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike. Located near the Prague Zoo and Botanical Garden, it offers a serene cultural retreat just a short tram ride from the city centre.
