Founded in 993 by Saint Adalbert and Duke Boleslaus II, Břevnov Monastery is the oldest male Benedictine monastery in Bohemia and a spiritual landmark on Prague’s western edge. Its Baroque architecture, shaped by Christoph and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, includes the Basilica of St. Margaret, a Romanesque crypt, and the ornate Theresian Hall. The monastery’s tranquil gardens and historic brewery—dating back to the 13th century—offer a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustle. Visitors can explore frescoed halls, a monastic library, and the Vojtěška pavilion, built over the founding spring. Guided tours reveal centuries of religious, cultural, and political history, including the monastery’s resilience through wars, communist suppression, and its revival after 1990. Today, Břevnov Monastery remains a living community, hosting masses, cultural events, and offering accommodation at Hotel Adalbert. Břevnov Monastery is located at Markétská 1/28, 169 00 Praha 6, in the Břevnov district of western Prague. Founded in 993, it is the oldest male Benedictine monastery in the Czech Republic and stands as a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, with highlights including the Basilica of St. Margaret, an 11th-century Romanesque crypt, and the ornate Theresian Hall. The tranquil monastery gardens are freely accessible and feature the Baroque Vojtěška Pavilion, remnants of historic greenhouses, and a cemetery where Czech singer-songwriter Karel Kryl is buried. Within the grounds, visitors can also find the St. Adalbert Břevnov Monastic Brewery, the oldest brewery in the Czech lands, serving its own Benedict beer in the Klášterní šenk restaurant and taproom. Accommodation is available at Hotel Adalbert, and the area is easily reached by tram 22 to the Břevnovský klášter stop, just a short ride from Prague Castle and Strahov Monastery.
