The Gas Museum (Plynárenské muzeum) in Prague offers a unique look into the history and development of the gas industry in the Czech Republic and the world. Located within the premises of Pražská plynárenská in Prague 4 - Michle, it was the first museum of its kind in the country, opening in 1999. During a visit (which requires a pre-booked appointment), you can expect to see a variety of exhibits showcasing the evolution of gas usage from its beginnings to the present day. This includes a collection of historical gas appliances, demonstrating how gas was used for heating (including unique gas irons!), cooking, and even lighting in the past. The museum features models of old gas production facilities and gasworks, giving you an idea of the infrastructure involved in producing and distributing gas. A highlight is the reconstructed model of the Michle gasworks as it appeared in 1937. A significant part of the collection is dedicated to gas meters, with over 150 examples on display, ranging from the earliest models (dating back to 1873) to modern "smart" meters. Outside the museum building, you can see the main gate of the Michle gasworks, decorated with the impressive sculpture "Apotheosis of Gas Industry" by Ladislav Šaloun, which symbolizes work and science in the gas industry.
