Vrtba Garden is a hidden Baroque gem tucked into Prague’s Lesser Town, just steps from Charles Bridge and beneath the slopes of Petřín Hill. Created in the early 18th century for Count Jan Josef of Vrtba, the garden showcases Italian-style terraces adorned with mythological statues by Matyáš Bernard Braun and frescoes by Václav Vavřinec Reiner. Its layered design offers sweeping views of Prague’s rooftops, including St. Nicholas Church and the spires of Old Town. Despite its central location, the garden remains peaceful, shielded by surrounding buildings. Visitors enter through an unassuming doorway on Karmelitská Street, emerging into a world of sculpted hedges, elegant staircases, and seasonal blooms. The Sala Terrena hosts exhibitions and concerts, while the upper terraces provide one of the city’s most photogenic panoramas. Vrtba Garden is a stunning Baroque terraced garden located on the slopes of Petřín Hill in Prague’s Malá Strana district, just a short walk from Lesser Town Square and near Prague Castle. The entrance is discreetly set at Karmelitská Street, making this UNESCO-listed gem easy to miss amid the bustling historic neighborhood. Designed in the early 18th century by architect František Maxmilián Kaňka for Count Jan Josef of Vrtba, the garden features intricate statues by Matyáš Bernard Braun and frescoes by Václav Vavřinec Reiner. Its three-tiered terraces offer panoramic views of Prague Castle, St. Nicholas Church, and the rooftops of Malá Strana. Vrtba Garden is surrounded by several of Prague’s most celebrated attractions. Within a few minutes’ walk, visitors can reach the Charles Bridge, St. Nicholas Church, Kampa Island, and the Petřín Funicular. The garden is also adjacent to the Vrtba Palace and close to a variety of cafés, restaurants, and boutique hotels.
