The Žižkov Television Tower is Prague’s tallest structure and one of its most unconventional landmarks, soaring 216 meters above the city’s skyline. Built between 1985 and 1992 in the Žižkov district, the tower exemplifies high-tech architecture with its trio of concrete pillars supporting nine futuristic pods. Originally designed to improve broadcast signals and jam Western transmissions, it now houses an observatory, restaurant, and even a luxury one-room hotel. The tower’s controversial beginnings—built over a historic Jewish cemetery—have given way to a more favorable reputation, especially after Czech artist David Černý added his iconic crawling baby sculptures to its exterior. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the observation deck at 93 meters, dine at the Oblaca Restaurant, or relax in Tower Park’s surrounding gardens. Žižkov Television Tower is located at Mahlerovy sady 1, in the Žižkov district of Prague 3, rising prominently above the city’s skyline. This striking 216-meter structure, completed in 1992, is a landmark of structural expressionism and is easily reached via the Jiřího z Poděbrad metro station (line A) or by tram and bus connections nearby. The tower’s observatory, situated 93 meters above ground, offers panoramic 360° views of Prague, while lower levels house a restaurant, café, and even a unique one-room hotel. Surrounding the tower is Mahlerovy sady park, featuring a children’s playground, mini-golf, and a skating rink in winter. The area provides a glimpse into Prague’s more contemporary and residential side, distinct from the city’s medieval core. Nearby, visitors can explore the vibrant Žižkov neighborhood, known for its lively bars, cafés, and the Army Museum Žižkov. The tower is also famous for David Černý’s “Babies” sculptures crawling up its pillars, adding an artistic touch to its futuristic silhouette.
