The Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart is a museum dedicated to the modern history of southwest Germany, presenting more than two centuries of political, social, and cultural change. Opened in 2002 on Stuttgart’s “Kulturmeile,” the museum was designed by architects James Stirling, Michael Wilford, and Manuel Schupp. Its permanent exhibition traces the story of Baden, Württemberg, and Hohenzollern from the French Revolution to the present day. More than 1,500 original objects, 1,000 photographs, films, and interactive stations bring history to life, highlighting themes such as democracy, migration, industrialization, and everyday life. Visitors encounter unusual artifacts, from 200‑year‑old bread rolls to personal testimonies of war and reconstruction, which illustrate how global events shaped local lives. The museum also houses the Hotel Silber memorial, once the Gestapo headquarters in Stuttgart, and the Stauffenberg Memorial, honoring resistance against National Socialism.
