Burg Hofen is Stuttgart’s only surviving castle ruin with towering wall remains, perched above the Neckar River in the district of Hofen. Built around 1250 to secure a vital river crossing and trade route, the castle was strategically located on a spur above the Neckar. Early records mention knights Luithart von Mühlhausen and his son Kuno von Hofen, linking the site to regional nobility. The castle featured a rectangular layout with a massive shield wall, surrounded by defensive trenches and accessed via a western gate. It was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War and partially dismantled in 1783, with its stones repurposed for nearby buildings, including the St. Barbara Church. In 1999, the city of Stuttgart acquired and restored the site, preserving its historical significance. Today, Burg Hofen offers a quiet retreat with scenic views and a glimpse into medieval architecture, making it a unique cultural landmark within Stuttgart’s urban landscape.
