Neues Schloss Stuttgart is a majestic Baroque palace in the heart of the city, symbolizing Württemberg’s royal legacy and architectural grandeur. Commissioned by Duke Carl Eugen in 1746, the palace was designed to rival Versailles, with a three-winged layout and a grand cour d’honneur. Italian architect Leopoldo Retti led the initial construction, followed by Philippe de La Guêpière and others, blending Baroque, Rococo, and Classical styles. Completed in 1807, the palace served as the residence of Württemberg’s dukes and kings until the early 20th century. Severely damaged during World War II, it was restored between 1958 and 1964 and now houses the Baden-Württemberg Ministries of Finance and Economy. Located on Schlossplatz, Neues Schloss remains a central landmark, surrounded by gardens, fountains, and cultural venues. Though not open for regular public tours, its exterior and courtyard are popular with visitors, especially during festivals and city events. The palace stands as a testament to Stuttgart’s historical depth and urban elegance.
Stuttgart Germany
The Neues Schloss (New Palace) in Stuttgart is located prominently at Schlossplatz, the city's main square in the heart of Stuttgart’s Mitte district. This grand 18th-century Baroque palace, one of the last large city palaces built in southern Germany, serves today as offices for several Baden-Württemberg government ministries. The Neues Schloss forms a stunning architectural centerpiece surrounded by the bustling Schlossplatz, which features extensive lawns, fountains, several sculpted statues including deer and lions, and a lively public space popular for events and markets. Nearby are key landmarks such as the Altes Schloss (Old Castle), the Königsbau neoclassical building, and the popular Königsstraße shopping street which runs through the square from north to south. This central location is well served by public transportation including the nearby Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and U-Bahn stops, making the Neues Schloss highly accessible to visitors exploring Stuttgart's rich history and vibrant city life. The adjoining Schlossgarten park adds green space for relaxation close to the palace.
