The Theodor-Heuss-Haus in Stuttgart is both a memorial and museum, dedicated to Germany’s first Federal President and his legacy as a statesman, writer, and advocate of democracy. Located at Feuerbacher Weg 46 in the leafy Killesberg district, the house was built in the 1950s and became Theodor Heuss’s residence after he left office in 1959. He lived here until his death in 1963, and the building has since been preserved as a cultural site. Since 1995 it has been managed by the Stiftung Bundespräsident-Theodor-Heuss-Haus, which transformed the home into a museum and forum for democratic education. Visitors can explore Heuss’s authentically reconstructed living spaces, including his study, lounge, and dining room, furnished with original pieces that reflect his modest lifestyle. The permanent exhibition, titled Democracy as a Way of Life, presents his biography alongside the political and cultural history of postwar Germany, using documents, photographs, and multimedia stations. Special exhibitions and events further highlight themes of democracy, civic responsibility, and political culture. Today, the Theodor-Heuss-Haus is not only a place of remembrance but also a vibrant venue for dialogue, connecting history with contemporary debates about freedom and democracy.

This historic house was the final residence of Germany’s first Federal President, Theodor Heuss, from 1959 until his death in 1963.
