The Fernsehturm Stuttgart is the world’s first television tower built from reinforced concrete, a pioneering structure that redefined modern engineering. Completed in 1956 after 20 months of construction, the 217-meter tower was designed by engineer Fritz Leonhardt and quickly became a global prototype for similar towers. Located on the Hoher Bopser hill, it offers panoramic views of Stuttgart, the Swabian Jura, and the Black Forest. Originally intended as a simple transmission mast, Leonhardt’s vision transformed it into a sleek, functional landmark combining technology and public access. The tower houses broadcasting equipment for Südwestrundfunk (SWR) and features an observation deck and café, making it a popular tourist destination. Despite initial skepticism, the Fernsehturm became a symbol of Stuttgart’s innovation and is now a protected cultural monument. Its elegant silhouette and engineering legacy continue to inspire architects and visitors alike.

Location

The Fernsehturm Stuttgart, or Stuttgart TV Tower, is located at Jahnstraße 120 in the southern district of Degerloch, rising atop the hill Hoher Bopser. Standing 217 meters tall, it is the world’s first television tower built from reinforced concrete and remains one of Stuttgart’s most iconic landmarks. From its observation deck, visitors enjoy sweeping 360° views of the city, the Neckar Valley, and on clear days, even the Swabian Alps and the Black Forest. The tower area, known as the Waldau, is surrounded by green spaces, walking paths, and sports facilities including the Gazi-Stadion auf der Waldau, home of the Stuttgarter Kickers football club. Nearby are the Stuttgart Zacke rack railway, Degerloch cafés, and forest trails leading toward the city’s southern hills.​
