Hohenheim Palace in Stuttgart is a Rococo gem surrounded by botanical gardens and steeped in royal and academic history. Originally a medieval manor, the estate was transformed in the late 18th century by Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg as a gift to Franziska von Hohenheim, his mistress and later wife. Construction began in 1785, but the palace remained unfinished at the duke’s death in 1793. Its elegant design features symmetrical wings, ornamental facades, and landscaped gardens inspired by Versailles. In 1818, King Wilhelm I repurposed the site for agricultural education, founding what is now the University of Hohenheim. Today, the palace serves as the university’s administrative center and hosts public events, exhibitions, and guided tours. Visitors can explore the surrounding exotic and botanical gardens, which include rare plant species, historic greenhouses, and tranquil walking paths. Hohenheim Palace remains a unique blend of aristocratic legacy and scientific innovation, offering a serene escape on Stuttgart’s southern edge.

Hohenheim Palace is located at Schloss Hohenheim 1 in the Hohenheim district of Stuttgart’s Plieningen borough. This Rococo manor, originally a 12th-century fief, was rebuilt in the 18th century by Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg and served as his summer residence. The palace now forms the centerpiece of the University of Hohenheim campus, which includes extensive botanical gardens and research institutes focused on agriculture and horticulture. The surrounding park features over 4,000 plant species, serene walking paths, and historic garden structures, creating a unique blend of natural beauty and academic heritage. Nearby are other university facilities and museums, such as the German Agricultural Museum, as well as local dining options and green spaces for visitors.
