The Mendelssohn-Haus Leipzig is the only surviving residence of composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the world’s only museum dedicated to his life and work. Located on Goldschmidtstraße, the elegant late Biedermeier apartment preserves the atmosphere of the years when Mendelssohn directed the Gewandhaus Orchestra and composed masterpieces such as the oratorio Elijah. Visitors can explore his study, family rooms, and the historic music salon, once frequented by Robert and Clara Schumann, Richard Wagner, and Hans Christian Andersen. Today, the salon hosts chamber concerts every Sunday, continuing the tradition of intimate music-making in the composer’s home. The museum also presents original manuscripts, letters, and watercolors by Mendelssohn, alongside interactive installations that bring his music and era to life. Managed by the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Foundation, the house combines historical authenticity with modern interpretation, offering a vivid portrait of one of the Romantic era’s most influential musicians and his enduring connection to Leipzig’s cultural identity.

The Mendelssohn-Haus in Leipzig is located at Goldschmidtstraße 12, 04103 Leipzig, in the city centre. It is the last preserved private residence of the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Nearby, visitors find themselves close to prominent cultural landmarks such as the Gewandhaus concert hall, Leipzig Opera, and the historic Augustusplatz square. The area also offers easy access to public transport, including several tram lines at Augustusplatz, and is within walking distance of the Grassimuseum, universities, cafés, and shops, making it a rich cultural hub in Leipzig’s heart.
