Formed from a former open-cast lignite mine, the lake is part of the Leipzig New Lake District and today covers 2.5 square kilometers with a depth of up to 57 meters. Its nine-kilometer shoreline is lined with sandy beaches, cycling and hiking paths, and inviting picnic spots, making it a favorite destination for both locals and visitors. A highlight is the Kanupark Markkleeberg, one of Europe’s most modern whitewater facilities, where guests can try rafting, kayaking, or hydrospeed on Olympic-standard courses. Sailing, surfing, diving, and stand-up paddling add to the variety of water sports, while passenger boats offer a more leisurely way to enjoy the scenery. It was formed from a former lignite open-cast mine and opened as a recreational area in 2006. The lake covers an area of about 2.5 square kilometers and features sandy beaches, scenic walking and cycling paths, and excellent water quality for swimming. On its southeastern shore lies the Kanupark Markkleeberg, Germany’s only pump-powered artificial whitewater slalom course, popular for rafting and kayaking. Nearby are beaches such as Auenhain Beach, playgrounds, and cafes, making it a great spot for family outings and water sports enthusiasts.
