The Botanischer Garten der Universität Leipzig is the oldest botanical garden in Germany and one of the oldest in the world, tracing its roots back to the mid-16th century. Founded between 1542 and 1580 as a medicinal plant garden, it has evolved into a living archive of global biodiversity. Today, spread across 3.5 hectares, the garden nurtures more than 7,000 plant species, representing over 360 families from nearly every continent. Its collections are arranged both systematically and geographically, allowing visitors to explore alpine flora, Asian steppes, North American prairies, and tropical ecosystems within its extensive greenhouses. The garden also features a medicinal herb garden, a “scent and touch” garden designed for sensory exploration, and seasonal highlights such as the celebrated orchid shows. Despite being destroyed during World War II, the garden was painstakingly rebuilt and modernized, with new greenhouses and research facilities added after reunification.
