Located on the city’s southern edge, the lake was created between 1993 and 2000 as part of the Leipzig New Lake District, a pioneering project in post-industrial renaturation. Covering more than 400 hectares with a depth of up to 54 meters, Cospudener See offers crystal-clear waters that meet EU bathing standards and attract over half a million visitors annually. Its 10-kilometer circular path is ideal for cycling, skating, and walking, while the long sandy North Beach—Saxony’s largest inland beach—invites sunbathing and swimming. The Zöbigker Hafen marina provides a lively hub for sailing, boat rentals, and lakeside dining, while water sports such as stand-up paddling, canoeing, and diving make the lake a year-round attraction. Linked to Leipzig’s waterways, it is even possible to paddle from the city center through the Auenwald forest directly to the lake. With its mix of recreation, nature, and urban accessibility, Cospudener See has become a symbol of Leipzig’s transformation, offering both locals and visitors a place to relax, explore, and enjoy the spirit of the Neuseenland.

Cospudener See, known locally as “Cossi,” is an expansive recreational lake on the southern edge of Leipzig, straddling the boundary with Markkleeberg and integrated into the city's New Lake District. The lake was transformed from a former lignite open-cast mine and now serves as a vibrant destination for leisure, just 10 kilometers from Leipzig's city center and easily accessible by tram, bus, or bicycle. The north shore features Saxony’s longest sandy beach, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and beach sports, while the east side is home to Zöbigker harbor, offering restaurants, saunas, boat rentals, and a marina. The area includes parks, the Cospuden Landscape Park, and scenic trails popular with cyclists and walkers. Nearby highlights include the picturesque forests of Leipziger Auenwald, the panoramic Bistumshöhe tower, and the BELANTIS theme park, creating a unique blend of nature, relaxation, and family-friendly attractions.
