The Memorial Museum in the “Round Corner” is one of Leipzig’s most powerful sites of remembrance, housed in the former district headquarters of the Ministry for State Security (Stasi). Preserved in its original condition, the building allows visitors to step directly into the atmosphere of East Germany’s surveillance state. The permanent exhibition Stasi – Power and Banality reveals the structures, methods, and everyday intrusions of the secret police, displaying authentic objects such as forged documents, hidden cameras, listening devices, and even a detention cell. Another exhibition, Leipzig on the Way to the Peaceful Revolution, documents the protests of autumn 1989 that led to the fall of the SED dictatorship. On 4 December 1989, demonstrators occupied this very building, marking a turning point in the struggle for freedom. Today, the museum stands as both a warning and a place of learning, ensuring that the mechanisms of repression and the courage of resistance remain visible for future generations.
