Completed in 1905 on the site of the former Pleissenburg fortress, the New Town Hall has served as the headquarters of Leipzig’s city administration ever since. Designed in a historicist style with neo-Renaissance influences, the vast complex is renowned for its richly decorated façade, castle-like courtyards, and monumental staircases. Its most iconic feature is the soaring main tower, rising to 114.8 meters, making it the tallest city hall tower in Germany. With more than 1,700 rooms spread across its wings, it is also one of the largest municipal buildings in the world. Beyond its administrative role, the New Town Hall has become a symbol of Leipzig’s resilience and ambition, reflecting the city’s transformation at the turn of the 20th century. Today, visitors are drawn not only to its architectural grandeur but also to the panoramic views from the tower, which reveal Leipzig’s historic core and modern skyline. The New Town Hall in Leipzig is located at Martin-Luther-Ring, prominently positioned in the city’s Mitte district on the southwest corner of Leipzig’s inner ring road. Built on the historic site of the old Pleissenburg castle, this impressive civic building has served as the seat of Leipzig’s municipal government since 1905 and features Germany’s tallest city hall tower. The area is well connected, with tram lines 2, 8, and 9, as well as bus line 89 stopping at Neues Rathaus, and S-Bahn access via the nearby Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz. In the immediate vicinity are important city landmarks such as St. Thomas Church, Augustusplatz, and the Propsteikirche, along with the city library and the expansive pedestrian zone.
