Friedenspark
Covering around 20 hectares in the southeast of the city, the park was created in 1983 on the grounds of the former Neuer Johannisfriedhof, Leipzig’s second municipal cemetery established in 1846. After the cemetery was closed in 1970 and secularized under the GDR, the area was redesigned as a public park. Traces of its past remain visible in fragments of walls and scattered gravestones, lending the landscape a quiet, contemplative character. Today, Friedenspark is known for its wide lawns, old tree stands, and themed gardens, including the Apothecary Garden and the Duft- und Tastgarten, a sensory garden opened in 2007 that invites visitors to explore plants through scent and touch. The park also borders the striking Russian Memorial Church, adding a distinctive architectural backdrop. Popular with families, students, and walkers, Friedenspark offers both open spaces for leisure and shaded paths for peaceful strolls.
