Alte Börse

About

Built in 1678 on the Naschmarkt at the initiative of Leipzig’s merchants, the building served for nearly two centuries as a neutral meeting place where business deals were concluded, auctions held, and bills of exchange traded. Its restrained yet dignified architecture reflects the early Baroque style, with a symmetrical façade and decorative gables that symbolized the city’s prosperity as a European trade hub. After commercial activity moved to larger premises in the late 19th century, the Alte Börse found new life as a cultural venue. Today, its bright, wood-paneled hall with seating for around 200 people hosts concerts, readings, lectures, and festive receptions, continuing its tradition as a place of exchange—now of ideas and art rather than goods. Standing opposite the Old Town Hall and next to the Goethe monument, the Alte Börse remains a focal point of Leipzig’s historic center, embodying both the city’s mercantile heritage and its ongoing role as a stage for cultural dialogue.
