Covering nearly 6,000 hectares, this floodplain forest follows the courses of the White Elster, Pleiße, and Luppe rivers, creating a green corridor that links Leipzig’s urban core with its surrounding countryside. Once shaped by seasonal flooding, the forest has evolved from softwood stands of alder and willow into a hardwood ecosystem dominated by oak, ash, and maple. Its biodiversity is remarkable: deer, foxes, and beavers thrive alongside rare bird species such as kingfishers and black kites, while the undergrowth shelters countless amphibians and insects. The Auenwald is not only a vital ecological habitat but also a cherished recreational space, with an extensive network of trails for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. Highlights include the Wildpark, the Rosental meadows, and the Auwaldstation, an environmental education center that introduces visitors to the forest’s delicate balance. Leipziger Auenwald is a large, tranquil floodplain forest located along the White Elster River, stretching through the heart of Leipzig and extending into the southern outskirts. It is recognized as one of the largest lowland riparian forests in Central Europe and forms a unique natural green corridor that merges into the city center, offering extensive walking, running, and cycling trails, as well as wildlife viewing opportunities. The forest is easily accessible from Leipzig’s city center via public transport, with tram and S-Bahn lines connecting to nearby stops such as Waldstraße. Visitors can also reach it on foot or by bike from Augustusplatz, making it a convenient urban nature retreat.
