The Theater der Jungen Welt (TDJW) in Leipzig is Germany’s oldest professional theatre for young audiences and one of the most renowned in the German-speaking world. Founded in 1946, it has become a cultural landmark dedicated to children, teenagers, young adults, and families, offering a cross-disciplinary program that spans drama, music, dance, and experimental formats. With around 700 performances each season, the TDJW presents works for all ages—from toddlers to adults—often tackling socially relevant and thought-provoking themes. Based in the Theaterhaus am Lindenauer Markt, it houses three permanent stages and also takes productions on the road, performing in schools, kindergartens, and even its own theatre bus. The theatre is not only a stage but also a hub for cultural education, with its “Junge Wildnis” department fostering participatory projects and creative learning experiences. International collaborations and festival appearances have earned the TDJW multiple awards, including the prestigious Theaterpreis des Bundes. Today, it stands as both an experimental platform and a community space, shaping Leipzig’s cultural life while inspiring audiences to engage with theatre as a space of imagination, dialogue, and discovery.

Theater der Jungen Welt is located at Lindenauer Markt 21 in the western part of Leipzig. This theater complex hosts three permanent venues within the Theaterhaus am Lindenauer Markt and is easily accessible by tram lines 7, 8, 15, 74, 130, and 131, all stopping at Lindenauer Markt just steps away from the entrance. Nearby are residential areas with parking options and public transport connections that facilitate access from the city center.
