St. Thomas Church
Founded in the 12th century and rebuilt as a late Gothic hall church between 1492 and 1496, St. Thomas has long stood at the heart of Leipzig’s spiritual and cultural life. Its soaring tower, 68 meters high, dominates the skyline, while the interior reflects both medieval craftsmanship and 19th‑century neo-Gothic renovations. The church is inseparably linked with Johann Sebastian Bach, who served as Thomaskantor from 1723 until his death in 1750; today, his tomb rests within the sanctuary, making it a place of pilgrimage for music lovers worldwide. The prestigious St. Thomas Boys Choir, founded in 1212 and once directed by Bach himself, continues to perform here, carrying forward an unbroken tradition of choral excellence.
