Oper Leipzig is one of Europe’s great musical stages, uniting opera, operetta, musicals, and ballet under one roof. With roots reaching back to 1693, it is the second oldest municipal music theatre in Germany and the third oldest in Europe. The current opera house on Augustusplatz, opened in 1960, is a listed building and a striking example of post-war modernist architecture, seating over 1,270 guests in its trapezoidal auditorium renowned for excellent acoustics. Oper Leipzig is home to the world-famous Gewandhausorchester, an acclaimed ensemble of soloists, a celebrated choir, and the Leipzig Ballet, ensuring a rich and diverse program that spans from Baroque masterpieces to contemporary premieres. Alongside the main stage, the Musikalische Komödie in Haus Dreilinden specializes in operetta and musical theatre, adding further breadth to the repertoire. Internationally recognized for its artistic excellence, Oper Leipzig also plays a central role in the city’s cultural life, hosting festivals, collaborations, and educational projects that connect tradition with innovation. Oper Leipzig is located at Augustusplatz 12 in the heart of Leipzig's city center. The opera house, built in 1960, stands on the bustling Augustusplatz square, which is a central hub surrounded by key city landmarks. Nearby are the Leipzig Gewandhaus concert hall, the City-Hochhaus tower, and the main train station within a five-minute walk. Public transport is excellent, with numerous tram lines stopping directly at Augustusplatz, making the opera easily accessible. The area also offers a lively mix of cafés, restaurants, and shops, as well as cultural attractions such as St. Thomas Church and the Leipzig Museum of Contemporary Art, creating a vibrant atmosphere for visitors before or after performances.
