Located on Zentralstraße, the memorial stands on the site of the Great Synagogue, which was burned down during the November Pogrom of 1938. Designed by architect Dani Karavan and inaugurated in 2001, the installation consists of 140 empty bronze chairs arranged in rows on a raised platform. Each chair symbolizes 100 members of Leipzig’s once-thriving Jewish community, which numbered around 14,000 before the Holocaust. The stark emptiness of the chairs evokes both absence and presence, serving as a haunting reminder of lives lost and a community erased. The memorial’s minimalist design encourages quiet reflection, while plaques provide historical context about the synagogue and the fate of Leipzig’s Jews. Today, the site is not only a place of mourning but also of education, frequently visited by school groups, locals, and international guests. It stands on the site where Leipzig’s grand synagogue once stood before its destruction during Kristallnacht in 1938, serving as a poignant space for remembrance of the approximately 14,000 Jewish citizens from Leipzig who perished in the Holocaust. The memorial features an installation of 140 empty bronze chairs arranged on a raised platform, symbolizing the lost lives and outlining the floor plan of the former synagogue.
