The Museum der Druckkunst Leipzig is a living workshop museum that preserves and demonstrates 500 years of printing history in the heart of Plagwitz, Leipzig’s former industrial district. Founded in 1994 and housed in a historic printing works, it combines the atmosphere of an authentic factory with the vibrancy of a cultural venue. Unlike traditional museums, its collection of around 90 functioning machines and presses is kept in working order, allowing visitors to experience techniques such as letterpress, intaglio, lithography, and screen printing in action. Highlights include one of the last active type foundries in Europe, a complete bookbinding workshop, and the rare light printing process of collotype. Guided tours, workshops, and international artist residencies make the museum a place of hands-on learning and creative exchange, while special exhibitions and events like the Leipzig Typotage connect it to global networks of typography and design. As both archive and active workshop, the Museum der Druckkunst celebrates Leipzig’s legacy as a world city of books and printing.

Situated in a historic printing factory with a striking Art Deco facade, the museum offers interactive exhibits featuring working vintage printing machines, hands-on workshops, and demonstrations that celebrate Leipzig’s rich heritage in bookmaking and printing. Nearby, visitors can find the lively Neulindenau district with its creative studios and cafés, and the museum is well-served by tram lines 1 and 2, which stop at Holbeinstraße, making it easily accessible from central Leipzig.
