The Schillerhaus in Leipzig is the city’s oldest preserved farmhouse and a literary memorial of European importance. Built in 1717 in the village of Gohlis, it became the summer residence of Friedrich Schiller in 1785, when the young poet found refuge and inspiration among friends and patrons. During his stay, he worked on the second act of Don Carlos, revised Fiesco, and drafted the first version of his Ode to Joy, later immortalized by Beethoven in the Ninth Symphony. Today, the house is part of the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig and presents a permanent exhibition with around 100 objects that illuminate Schiller’s life, his Leipzig connections, and the cultural climate of the late 18th century. The carefully restored interiors evoke the atmosphere of his time, while the idyllic garden continues to host concerts, readings, and theatre performances. As both a place of remembrance and a vibrant cultural venue, the Schillerhaus celebrates the enduring power of poetry, music, and intellectual exchange.

The Schillerhaus is located at Menckestraße 42, 04155 Leipzig, in the Gohlis district in the northern part of the city. It is the oldest preserved farmhouse in Leipzig and is famous for being the summer residence of the poet Friedrich Schiller in 1785, where he wrote parts of Don Carlos and the first version of "Ode to Joy." The house is set in a quiet residential neighborhood with access to tram line 4 at the nearby Menckestraße stop, and visitors can enjoy the peaceful garden area. This location offers a tranquil contrast to the bustling city centre while still being accessible for those exploring Leipzig’s cultural sites.
