The Museum of Independence Traditions in Łódź is housed in a former tsarist prison on Gdańska Street, a stark and historically charged building constructed in the 1880s. Once used for political prisoners, it later served various regimes, retaining its carceral function well into the post‑war decades. Today the museum preserves and interprets the city’s struggle for freedom, documenting resistance movements, political repression and the everyday realities of those who fought for national sovereignty. Archival photographs, personal testimonies, documents and artefacts trace the history of Polish independence efforts from the partitions through the 20th century. The Radogoszcz Martyrdom Memorial, one of its branches, deepens this narrative with exhibitions dedicated to the tragic events of the German occupation, including the 1945 massacre of prisoners. Together, the museum’s sites offer a powerful, reflective journey through Łódź’s turbulent past and the enduring pursuit of independence.

The Museum of Independence Traditions in Łódź has its main branch at Gdańska 13, housed in a former Tsarist-era prison in the city center, south of the Manufaktura complex. It is steps from vibrant Piotrkowska Street with its shops, restaurants, and street art, as well as the grand Izrael Poznański Palace (now the Museum of the City of Łódź). Nearby lie ms² Museum of Art, Karol Poznański's mansion (Music Academy), and Freedom Square with its Kościuszko Monument. The Radogoszcz Martyrdom branch sits at Zgierska 147, a former WWII prison site in a quieter northern area, commemorating ghetto victims near the Litzmannstadt Ghetto Memorial.
