The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Łódź is one of the city’s most historic and architecturally striking temples, standing on Kościelny Square in the Bałuty district. Built between 1888 and 1897 to replace an earlier wooden church, it was designed by Konstanty Wojciechowski in a refined Neo‑Gothic style. Its red‑brick façade, twin towers and three‑nave basilica layout reflect the ambitions of a rapidly growing industrial city, while its construction was supported by Catholic, Protestant and Jewish factory owners, symbolising Łódź’s multicultural character. Inside, the church houses a 17th‑century triptych of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary, richly coloured stained‑glass windows and a Gothic organ imported from Vienna in 1892. The crypt contains the resting place of Stanisława Leszczyńska, the heroic Auschwitz nurse, and the churchyard preserves the oldest gravestone in Łódź from 1822. During World War II, the building became a silent witness to the tragedy of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto. Today it remains an active parish and a powerful testament to the city’s layered history.
