Teatr im. Stefana Jaracza w Łodzi is the city’s oldest dramatic stage, tracing its origins to 1888 and continuing the legacy of Łódź’s first permanent theatre. After a fire destroyed its original home on Piotrkowska Street, the company moved to its current location on Jaracza Street, where it has operated for over a century. The theatre has undergone many transformations, including periods as Teatr Polski, Teatr Miejski and, during the German occupation, Theater zum Litzmannstadt, before receiving the name of actor Stefan Jaracz in 1949. Its stages have hosted some of Poland’s most influential performers, directors and scenographers, shaping national theatrical culture. Today the theatre presents a diverse repertoire across several stages, from classic drama to contemporary works, maintaining a strong artistic identity rooted in tradition yet open to new voices. As a cultural institution of regional importance, it remains a cornerstone of Łódź’s artistic life and a testament to the city’s enduring theatrical heritage.
