Teatr Powszechny in Łódź is one of the city’s most dynamic cultural institutions, known for its strong commitment to contemporary comedy and socially engaged theatre. Founded in 1945 and located on Legionów Street, it has developed a distinctive artistic identity shaped by the long‑standing vision of its director, Ewa Pilawska, who established the Polish Comedy Centre and the influential International Festival of Pleasant and Unpleasant Arts. The theatre presents an extensive annual repertoire across its Main Stage and the more intimate Small Stage, offering premieres of new Polish plays, reinterpretations of classics and projects dedicated to accessibility, including performances for blind and visually impaired audiences. With hundreds of shows each year and a loyal, diverse audience, Teatr Powszechny plays a central role in shaping the cultural life of Łódź. Currently undergoing a major modernisation that will transform it into the European Centre for Comedy and Theatre Education, it continues to evolve while remaining true to its mission of being “a theatre close to people.”
