St. Matthew’s Church in Łódź is a landmark Lutheran temple on Piotrkowska Street, built between 1909 and 1928 in an impressive Neo‑Romanesque style. Designed by Johannes Wende with later input from Franz Schwechten, the church was conceived during a period of dynamic growth and religious rivalry, its soaring spire and massive rotunda intended to stand alongside the nearby Catholic cathedral. The façade features round‑arched windows, decorative arcades and a striking central dome, giving the building a monumental yet harmonious character. Inside, the spacious nave is illuminated by stained‑glass windows and framed by robust pillars that emphasise the architectural rhythm. Time capsules discovered during renovations revealed newspapers, letters and banknotes from the early 20th century, adding to the church’s historical aura. Today St. Matthew’s remains an active Lutheran parish and a venue for ecumenical events and concerts, symbolising Łódź’s multicultural heritage.

St. Matthew’s Church is located on Piotrkowska Street in the south of central Łódź, at Piotrkowska 279/283, in the Śródmieście district. It stands in one of the city’s most important central corridors, with easy access to the surrounding downtown area. Nearby, you can find the Archcathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, the White Factory, the Central Museum of Textiles, and other historic buildings along Piotrkowska Street. The church is also close to tram routes and the main city-center sights, making it convenient to combine with a walk through Łódź’s historic core.
