The Radogoszcz Branch of the Museum of Independence Traditions in Łódź is one of the city’s most solemn and powerful memorial sites, located in the former factory building that became a place of imprisonment and tragedy during the German occupation. Between 1939 and 1945 the site served first as a transit camp and later as a prison, where thousands of residents of the Wartheland were held under brutal conditions. Its darkest chapter came in January 1945, when the retreating occupiers set the building on fire, killing more than a thousand prisoners locked inside. Today the preserved structure, including the surviving staircase, forms the core of a deeply moving exhibition that reconstructs prison cells, presents personal belongings, documents and photographs, and guides visitors through the history of the camp and the massacre. The museum’s narrative honours the victims while illuminating the mechanisms of oppression and the resilience of those who endured it, offering a stark and unforgettable encounter with the wartime history of Łódź.
Lodz Poland
The Museum of Independence Traditions – Radogoszcz Branch in Łódź is located at Zgierska 147, in a quieter northern residential area on the site of a former WWII prison and factory buildings. This poignant memorial commemorates victims of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto and Nazi atrocities, featuring exhibits on occupation life, prison cells, and a reconstructed street scene. Nearby stands the Radegast Station (Umschlagplatz), another branch of the museum marking the deportation point for Jews to extermination camps, just across the way. The area offers a reflective contrast to central Łódź, with modest housing, green spaces, and easy access via public transport to Piotrkowska Street or Manufaktura complex downtown.
