The Winzerberg, or “Vineyard Hill,” rises opposite Sanssouci Park and is one of Potsdam’s most distinctive historic landmarks. Created in the mid‑18th century under Frederick the Great, it was designed as a terraced vineyard in the Italian style, with four levels supported by massive retaining walls and crowned by a triumphal gate. The site combined utility and beauty, supplying grapes while serving as a striking architectural feature in the royal landscape. Over time, the vineyard fell into neglect, but in the late 20th century a dedicated citizens’ association began restoring the terraces, stairways, and winegrower’s house. Today, the Winzerberg is once again cultivated and open to visitors, offering sweeping views of Potsdam’s skyline and Sanssouci’s palaces. Recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble, it stands as a testament to civic engagement and the enduring dialogue between architecture, gardening, and cultural memory.

Winzerberg is a terraced vineyard and historical site situated at Schopenhauerstraße 23 in Potsdam, directly opposite the southern entrance to Sanssouci Park and just a few minutes’ walk northwest of the city’s Brandenburg Gate. The site features restored 18th and 19th-century terraces, a triumphal gate, and the picturesque Winzerhaus on the vineyard’s summit, with panoramic views of Potsdam’s palatial ensemble. Surrounding landmarks include Sanssouci Palace, the Church of Peace, the Neptune Grotto, and Luisenplatz. Winzerberg’s tranquil gardens, historic vineyard walls, and proximity to Sanssouci Park make it ideal for walks, photography, or simply relaxing amidst the city’s UNESCO World Heritage architecture.
