The Wasserturm at Potsdam Hauptbahnhof is one of the city’s most distinctive industrial monuments. Built in the late 19th century, the 23.5‑meter tower once supplied water for steam locomotives on the busy Berlin–Magdeburg line. Its robust brick construction and cylindrical form made it both a functional utility and a striking landmark at the station forecourt. When the railway complex was modernized in the 1990s, the tower was preserved as a listed building, surviving while much of the surrounding infrastructure was replaced. Over time, it has been adapted for new uses, including gastronomy, while retaining its historic character. Today, the Wasserturm stands as a reminder of Potsdam’s railway heritage and the era when steam power shaped the city’s growth. Visible from the station square, it connects past and present, welcoming travelers with a piece of authentic 19th‑century engineering that has become part of Potsdam’s urban identity.

The Wasserturm Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, or Potsdam Main Station Water Tower, is located directly beside Potsdam Hauptbahnhof at Friedrich-Engels-Straße 99, 14473 Potsdam, on the southern edge of the city’s center. The historic water tower is an immediate visual landmark as you exit the main station towards the bus terminal, standing opposite the tram station and adjacent to the multi-level Bahnhofspassagen shopping center. Nearby is the Long Bridge (Lange Brücke) crossing the Havel River, the scenic Alter Markt with St. Nicholas’ Church and Museum Barberini, and the city’s urban waterfront trails. Direct tram, bus, and S-Bahn connections radiate from the Hauptbahnhof, making this spot a hub for urban transport as well as a popular meeting point in central Potsdam.
