The Church of the Redeemer (Heilandskirche) in Sacrow, Potsdam, is one of the most picturesque churches in Germany, set directly on the banks of the Jungfernsee. Commissioned by King Frederick William IV and completed in 1844, it was designed by Ludwig Persius in the Italian Romanesque Revival style, inspired by early Christian basilicas. The church is distinguished by its elegant arcaded façade and a free‑standing campanile that rises like a Venetian bell tower above the water. Landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné integrated the church into the surrounding park, creating a harmonious ensemble of architecture and nature. During the Cold War, the church stood in the restricted border zone between East and West Berlin, falling into neglect and damage. After German reunification, it was carefully restored, regaining its role as both a place of worship and a cultural monument. Today, the Church of the Redeemer is part of Potsdam’s UNESCO World Heritage landscape, admired for its romantic lakeside setting and timeless architectural beauty.

Church of the Redeemer (Heilandskirche) is located on the bank of lake Jungfernsee in the Sacrow district, just south of Potsdam and immediately north of Sacrow Palace and park. Its Italian Romanesque-inspired design, with a freestanding campanile, stands out amid the park’s landscaped setting designed by Lenné, just inside the UNESCO World Heritage Havel landscape. Nearby points of interest include Sacrow Manor, the port of Sacrow, the lush parklands along the Havel river, and scenic walking trails that connect to Babelsberg Park and the expansive natural reserves along the lakeshore. The church’s tranquil setting, with waterside views, makes it a highlight for both architecture and nature enthusiasts visiting the Potsdam region.
