Flatowturm

About

Flatowturm in Potsdam is a striking neo-Gothic tower that crowns the landscape of Babelsberg Park with historic grandeur and panoramic views. Built between 1853 and 1856 under the direction of architect Johann Heinrich Strack, the 46-meter-high Flatowturm was inspired by the medieval Eschenheimer Tor in Frankfurt am Main. Commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm I, the tower continued Potsdam’s tradition of placing scenic viewpoints at prominent locations. Its crenellated brick façade, pointed spire, and star-shaped moat evoke romantic medieval architecture, while the interior once served as a guesthouse and repository for imperial collections. Today, visitors can explore partially restored rooms and ascend to the viewing platform for sweeping vistas of the Havel, Glienicke Bridge, and the surrounding parkland. The tower’s name refers to the Flatow estate in West Prussia, whose revenues supported its construction. As a landmark of Babelsberg’s garden design, Flatowturm remains a symbol of Prussian vision and architectural storytelling.

Location

The Flatowturm, or Flatow Tower, stands prominently in Babelsberg Park in Potsdam, rising 46 meters above a plateau. Built between 1853 and 1856 for Emperor Wilhelm I and designed by Johann Heinrich Strack, it reflects the neo-Gothic style inspired by the medieval Eschenheimer Gate Tower in Frankfurt am Main. The tower is located in the heart of Babelsberg Park, surrounded by a star-shaped moat and accessible via winding paths that reveal panoramic views of the park, the cityscape of Potsdam, and beyond to the Havel River and Wannsee lake. Nearby within Babelsberg Park are the English Tudor Gothic-inspired Babelsberg Palace, the neo-Gothic Matrosenhaus, and the historic Gerichtslaube. The park itself is a landscaped masterpiece designed by Peter Joseph Lenné and later enhanced by Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, offering visitors a blend of romantic gardens, architectural landmarks, and serene natural beauty. The tower historically served as a guesthouse and storage for collections and now serves as a viewpoint with some original interior décor preserved.
