Sanssouci Park

About

Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, near Berlin, is a masterpiece of landscape design and royal ambition. Commissioned by Frederick the Great in the mid-18th century, the park surrounds the Rococo-style Sanssouci Palace, his summer retreat built between 1745 and 1747. The terraced vineyard leading up to the palace reflects Frederick’s desire for harmony between nature and architecture. Expanding over 290 hectares, the park features Baroque gardens, romantic meadows, and architectural gems such as the Chinese House, the New Palace, and the Orangery. Designed by Peter Joseph Lenné in the 19th century, the grounds blend formal and naturalistic styles, with fountains, statues, and tree-lined avenues. Highlights include the Picture Gallery, the Church of Peace, and the Neptune Grotto. Sanssouci Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its artistic unity and historical depth. It offers visitors a serene yet grand experience, where philosophy, aesthetics, and royal legacy converge in one of Europe’s most enchanting cultural landscapes.
