St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) dominates Potsdam’s Old Market Square with its soaring dome and neoclassical elegance. Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and built between 1830 and 1837, the church reflects the ideals of German Classicism, with a Greek cross floor plan and a monumental portico reminiscent of an ancient temple. After Schinkel’s death, Ludwig Persius and Friedrich August Stüler oversaw the completion of the dome, which rises 77 meters above the city and remains one of Potsdam’s defining landmarks. The church suffered heavy damage during World War II but was painstakingly restored and re‑consecrated in 1981. Inside, the vast, light‑filled space is used for worship, concerts, and cultural events, continuing its role as both a sacred and civic center. Today, St. Nicholas Church stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal, uniting architectural grandeur with the living traditions of Potsdam’s community while anchoring the historic heart of the city.
