Nauen Gate (Nauener Tor) in Potsdam is one of the city’s three preserved historic gates and a landmark of early neo-Gothic architecture on the European continent. Completed in 1755, the gate was designed by Johann Gottfried Büring based on a sketch by Frederick the Great. Its pointed arches, battlements, and twin towers evoke medieval fortifications, though the structure was built purely for aesthetic and symbolic purposes. The gate once formed part of the city wall, connecting to the Jägertor and Brandenburg Gate, but the wall was dismantled in the 19th century. Nauen Gate’s design was inspired by English Gothic Revival architecture, making it the first of its kind in mainland Europe. Located near the Dutch Quarter, the gate now serves as a picturesque entry point to Potsdam’s historic centre, surrounded by cafés and boutiques. Its fairy-tale appearance and architectural significance make it a popular photo spot and a key element of Potsdam’s urban identity.
