The Temple of Friendship in Potsdam is a graceful neoclassical monument that honors personal bonds and Enlightenment ideals within Sanssouci Park. Commissioned by Frederick the Great in 1768, the temple was built in memory of his beloved sister Wilhelmine of Bayreuth, who shared his passion for philosophy, music, and the arts. Designed by Carl von Gontard, the circular structure features twelve Corinthian columns supporting a domed roof, echoing ancient Roman temples. Inside, a statue of Wilhelmine stands as a tribute to her intellect and influence, while the surrounding inscriptions reflect themes of loyalty and remembrance. Positioned near the obelisk and the main avenue of Sanssouci, the temple forms part of the park’s symbolic landscape, where architecture and emotion intertwine. The Temple of Friendship (Freundschaftstempel) is located in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, standing south of the park’s main boulevard near the New Palace. This small, round neoclassical temple was built between 1768 and 1770 by architect Carl von Gontard, commissioned by King Frederick II of Prussia in memory of his beloved sister Wilhelmine. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, the Temple of Friendship is set along scenic paths that connect to the nearby Temple of Antiquities to the north and the expansive lawns of Sanssouci. The area is rich in monuments, with the New Palace, the hedge theater, and other Baroque park features all just a short walk away. Medallions on the temple columns and a marble statue of Wilhelmine in the alcove serve as artistic tributes, making this temple a tranquil spot with strong historical and familial significance within the UNESCO World Heritage park.​
