The Obeliskportal in Potsdam is a ceremonial gateway that marks the eastern entrance to Sanssouci Park with classical grandeur and historical symbolism. Designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff and completed in 1748, the portal features a central obelisk flanked by two sandstone columns and crowned with decorative vases. The obelisk itself is inscribed with the names of notable architects and artists who contributed to the development of Potsdam’s royal buildings, including Schlüter, Hildebrandt, and Knobelsdorff himself. Though inspired by ancient Egyptian forms, the structure reflects the Enlightenment-era fascination with antiquity and the power of architectural legacy. Positioned opposite the New Palace, the Obeliskportal serves as both a visual anchor and a symbolic threshold into the world of Prussian court culture. Its harmonious proportions and sculptural details exemplify the transition from Baroque to early Neoclassicism, making it a quiet yet dignified monument within the UNESCO-listed park landscape.

The Obeliskportal marks the eastern entrance to Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, located directly on Schopenhauerstrasse. Erected in 1747 at the behest of Frederick the Great and designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, this striking gateway features a 20-meter-tall obelisk adorned with fantasy hieroglyphs and flanked by sandstone statues of Flora and Pomona. The portal opens onto the park’s main avenue, offering a direct two-kilometer line of sight to the New Palace at the opposite end of the park. Nearby are Sanssouci Palace, the Picture Gallery, and the Sicilian Garden, all within easy walking distance. The Obeliskportal serves as a popular entry point to the UNESCO World Heritage Sanssouci Park, combining artistic landscape design with historic vistas and cultural landmarks at the heart of Potsdam.​
