The Loggia Alexandra is a romantic belvedere on the Böttcherberg above Klein Glienicke, forming part of the UNESCO‑listed cultural landscape of Potsdam and Berlin. Built between 1869 and 1870 by architects Ernst Petzholtz and Alexander Gilli, it was commissioned by Prince Carl of Prussia in memory of his sister Charlotte, who became Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia. Designed in the style of the Florentine early Renaissance, the half‑round open hall faces Potsdam and Schloss Babelsberg, creating striking visual axes across the Havel landscape. Its arcaded façade, supported by dark marble columns, once displayed vivid wall paintings in the manner of Pompeian frescoes, complemented by fine wood paneling and a marble floor. Though the structure fell into disrepair during the 20th century, it remains a poetic ruin, protected by glass walls and admired for its picturesque setting. Today, the Loggia Alexandra stands as a delicate monument to dynastic memory, architectural artistry, and the enduring interplay of landscape and design in Potsdam’s historic parks.
Potsdam GermanyLoggia Alexandra is located at Am Böttcherberg 8 in Potsdam's Klein Glienicke area, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site encompassing Potsdam and Berlin's palaces and parks. The classical loggia sits on elevated terrain overlooking the village of Klein Glienicke and the Havel River, providing scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Nearby landmarks include Glienicke Park, the historic Glienicke Bridge, Peacock Island, Babelsberg Park, and the Russian colony Alexandrowka, all surrounded by extensive green spaces and water features characteristic of the cultural landscape designed by Peter Joseph Lenné. The area combines architectural elegance with natural beauty, making the Loggia Alexandra a peaceful vantage point ideal for photography and quiet contemplation.
