Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam is the former summer residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, and a masterpiece of Rococo architecture. Built between 1745 and 1747 by architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, the palace was designed as a place “without a care” (sans souci in French), reflecting the king’s desire for retreat and intellectual reflection. Perched atop terraced vineyards, the single-story palace features an elegant yellow façade, ornate stucco interiors, and a domed central hall. It housed salons, music rooms, and Frederick’s private chambers, where he hosted Enlightenment thinkers like Voltaire. The surrounding Sanssouci Park, landscaped by Peter Joseph Lenné, includes fountains, sculptures, and auxiliary buildings such as the Picture Gallery and the New Chambers. Today, Sanssouci is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin, attracting visitors with its harmonious blend of art, architecture, and landscape. It remains one of Germany’s most iconic royal residences and a symbol of enlightened absolutism.

Built as the summer residence for Prussian King Frederick the Great, it is set atop terraced vineyard gardens, offering stunning views of the surrounding park landscapes.
