Fortunaportal

About

The Fortunaportal, or Fortuna Gate, stands on Potsdam’s Alter Markt as one of the city’s most symbolic monuments. Originally designed in 1701 by the Dutch architect Jean de Bodt, it served as the grand entrance to the Potsdam City Palace and was inaugurated to mark the coronation of Elector Frederick III as King Frederick I of Prussia. Crowned by a gilded statue of the goddess Fortuna, the gate embodied the aspirations of the new kingdom and is often regarded as the beginning of classical architecture in Potsdam. Severely damaged during the bombing of 1945, the remains were demolished in 1960, leaving the square without its historic centerpiece. Thanks to extensive fundraising and civic engagement, reconstruction began in 2000, and the restored Fortunaportal was unveiled in 2002. Today, it frames the rebuilt City Palace, now home to the Brandenburg Parliament, and continues to symbolize both Potsdam’s baroque heritage and the resilience of its citizens in preserving cultural memory.

Fortunaportal is located at Am Alten Markt in the heart of Potsdam’s historic Old Market Square. This impressive architectural landmark serves as the entrance to the courtyard of the Potsdam City Palace and stands opposite St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche), anchoring one of the city's key cultural and historical hubs. Nearby attractions include the Old City Hall, Potsdam Museum, Museum Barberini, and the Brandenburg State Parliament, all within easy walking distance. The lively square is surrounded by cafés, shops, and parks, making Fortunaportal a picturesque focal point for visitors exploring central Potsdam’s rich history and vibrant local life.
